* A completely new repertoire based on the new beautiful songs of the new album "O Paraíso"

A new sound, a new formation (still quintet with the exit of the acordeonist Gabriel Gomes and of the cellist Francisco Ribeiro and the introduction of a new instrument, the acoustic bass played by one of the best bass player of Portugal, Fernando Judice, ex-Trovante), but the same thematic universe, the same interior peace and that music that enters in your heart, remains there and carry us in various places of the Paradise... suggested by the chords of the keyboards of Carlos Maria Trindade, by the guitar of José Peixoto and Pedro Ayres Magalhaes and by the acoustic bass of Fernando Judice and, for us, by the best instrument of the group - the angelic voice of Teresa Salgueiro, for us every time better: voice, greater freedom and spontaneity of movements (we liked a lot the dance in "A Praia do Mar") and also a greater comunication with the public.
There were already 25 minutes from the
signed hour when the quintet entered the stage of the Zeiterion,
with the applauses of the 500 people present. A good song in the
opening: Coisas Pequenas, that would also serve to conclude the
show in the encores. Subsequently the others new songs of the
group: "Os Dias sao a Noite", "A Tempestade"
, "Não Muito Distante", "Haja o que
Houver", "Andorinha da Primavera", "O Fim da
Estrada", "Claridade", "A Praia do Mar",
"À Margem", "Carta para Ti", "Canção
aos Novos", "O Sonho", "O Paraíso" and
also two themes not contained in O Paraiso, "Os
Folioes" and "As Janeiras", inspired in
the popular music.
All the songs brings us to distant
places, reflected in the universes and ways of thinking that the
group visited and all this album is, like Pedro Ayres Magalhaes
said to us, a "dictionary of expressions of the world that
we visited".
In all the songs, some more suggestive than
others, the musical traditions of Portugal are the base, mixed
with influences of other atmospheres and musical tradictions,
like Brasil and Africa, suggested not by the messages of the
song, but by the sounds, chords and variations. Love is a theme
which is explained in various parts, but
concretely in "Carta para Ti" and
"Coisas Pequenas".
The public, very present, applauded every song and every instrumental intervals, but "A Praia do Mar", "Coisas Pequenas", "Andorinha da Primavera", "Agora (Canção aos Novos)" and "Os Dias São À Noite" were the songs most appreciated
After an interval of 15 minutes, the group returned to the stage to continue with its spectacular show, where, apart from the excellent voice of Teresa Salgueiro, we must underline the execution of the 4 instrumentists, in particular Pedro Ayres Magalhaes and José Peixoto on the classic guitars.
"O Sonho" and "O Paraiso" ended the heavenly show of Madredeus and to the audience which was to their feet, they returned to play "As Janeiras" and "Coisas Pequenas"
A show which leave all the people
enchanted
After the show we had time to talk with Teresa Salgueiro, Pedro Ayres Magalhaes and Carlos Maria Trindade.
"Sincerely, I liked immensely this show. The sound was great, the people were aware, disciplined, with great curiosity for the new repertoire of the group. I perceived that on the stage", said to us the keyboard player Carlos Maria Trindade.
About the international tours made recently and on the reaction of the public with the new formation and the new album, Carlos Maria Trindade has no doubts:
"We have been always well received and the people, that sometime knew about the alterations of the formation, doesn't ask us to play songs from the previous albums. They listened to that new songs, applauded much more. In Mexico, were we played for the first time, we were surprised by a theater full of people, with 6 thousand people, there to listen to us. Fantastic and all says that we will return quickly to that country".
The new album, "O Paraiso", even if it should be edited in the past 20 of October, the truth is that it is not yet edited here in EUA. It will happen in December. This tour, infact, is not really "in time". Carlos Maria Trindade explain us:
"Sìm, this tour should have been after the edition of the album, but the truth is that it waws already in the agenda for one year and so we had to do that concerts. Though, we hope to return to EUA in Decembre for the edition of the album in this country, with a show in Manhattan".
On the future projects of the group, we listened Teresa Salgueiro:
"After the annouced tours, our attention
goes to the Expo98 where we should give some concerts with
special guests, for example, with one of the greatest brazilian
cellist and with a symphonic orchestra, that is not something new
to us, because the past year we played with the symphonic
orchestra of S.Paulo and it was great", said us the
sympathetic singer of the group, that in the final showed to be
really satisfacted from the show in New Bedford.
Pedro Ayres Magalhaes, great "mind" of the group, that shows to be really enthusiastic with this new formation, revealed that "this new formation can't be compared with the preious one. The differences are great. I insist that we should not compare, even if we have the same name. We do not compose for bass, guitar and keyboard in the same way that before. The arrangments are completely different. To play again the old songs we have to study new arrangments."
The day after, at the Berklee Performance Center, in Boston, for a friend of us who assisted the show, the 1500 listenerwhere completely enchanted and there were a lot of americans to listen and in the final Madredeus had to return to the stage twice, enthusiastycally applauded by the audience completely to their feet....
Bravo!
They also assisted to a heavenly experience.

Um novo som, uma nova formação (agora
quinteto com a saída do acordeonista Gabriel Gomes e do
violoncelista Francisco Ribeiro e a introdução de um novo
instrumento, o baixo acústico excelentemente executado por um
dos melhores baixistas de Portugal, Fernando Júdice,
ex-Trovante), mas o mesmo universo temático, a mesma paz
interior e aquela música que entra no coração, permanece e nos
transporta para muitos lugares nesse Paraíso... sugeridos
pelos acordes do sintetizador de Carlos Maria Trindade, pelas
guitarras clássicas de José Peixoto e Pedro Ayres Magalhães e
pelo baixo acústico de Fernando Júdice e, quanto a nós,
pelo melhor instrumento do grupo -- a voz angélica de Teresa
Salgueiro, em nossa opinião cada vez melhor: voz, maior
liberdade e espontaneidade de movimentos (gostámos do bailado em
"A Praia do Mar") e até mais comunicação com o
público.
Já passava cerca de 25 minutos da hora marcada quando o quinteto pisou o palco do Zeiterion, sob os aplausos das cerca de 500 pessoas presentes. Um bonito tema a abrir: Coisas Pequenas, que serviria ainda para encerrar o espectáculo, já no encore final. Seguiram-se outros temas originais e inéditos do grupo: "Os Dias São à Noite", "A Tempestade", "Não Muito Distante", "Haja o que Houver", "Andorinha da Primavera", "O Fim da Estrada", "Claridade", "A Praia do Mar", "À Margem", "Carta para Ti", "Canção aos Novos", "O Sonho", "O Paraíso" e ainda dois temas não incluídos no "Paraíso", "Os Foliões" e "As Janeiras", inspirados na música popular.
Todos os temas levam-nos a lugares distantes, reflectidos nos universos e mentalidades que o grupo visitou e todo este álbum é, como nos disse Pedro Ayres Magalhães, um "dicionário das expressões do mundo que visitámos". Há em todos os temas -- alguns mais sugestivos que outros -- as tradições musicais portuguesas como base, misturadas com as influências de outras ambiências e tradições musicais, como o Brasil e África, sugeridos não pela mensagem do poema mas pelos sons, acordes e variações. O amor é também um tema largamente retratado em grande parte dos poemas, mais concretamente em "Carta para Ti" e "Coisas Pequenas".
O público, que esteve sempre à altura, muito atento, soube aplaudir todas as canções e intervalos instrumentais, mas "A Praia do Mar", "Coisas Pequenas", "Andorinha da Primavera", "Agora (Canção aos Novos)" e "Os Dias São À Noite" terão sido as canções mais aplaudidas.
Após um intervalo de 15 minutos, o grupo regressou ao palco para continuar com a sua espectacular actuação, onde, para além da excelente voz de Teresa Salgueiro, realce-se a execução perfeita dos quatro instrumentistas, em particular Pedro Ayres Magalhães e José Peixoto nas guitarras clássicas. Em todos os temas mostraram como é, em especial em "Agora (Canção aos Novos)", arrancando fortes aplausos dos presentes.
"O Sonho" e "O Paraíso" culminaram a actuação "paradisíaca" dos Madredeus e, a pedido do público, voltaram ao palco, interpretando: "As Janeiras" e "Coisas Pequenas".
Resumindo e concluindo, um espectáculo que deixou todos os presentes encantados. Disso não temos dúvida, a avaliar pelo adjectivo de um casal americano ali ao lado: "Beautiful"!
Depois do espectáculo tivemos ainda tempo para falar com Teresa Salgueiro, Pedro Ayres Magalhães e Carlos Maria Trindade.
"Sinceramente, gostei imenso deste espectáculo. O som estava óptimo, as pessoas mostraram-se muito atentas, disciplinadas, talvez levadas pela curiosidade deste novo repertório. Percebi isso no palco", disse-nos o teclista Carlos Maria Trindade, mesmo antes de seguir viagem para Boston, para o espectáculo no Berklee Performance Center, no passado sábado. "Apesar de termos menos público que o ano passado, gostei mais deste ano".

"Temos sido sempre muito bem
recebidos e as pessoas, talvez conhecedoras das alterações do
grupo, nem nos perguntam para tocarmos as canções de outros
álbuns. Ouvem estas novas canções, aplaudem e pedem mais.
Por exemplo, no México, onde actuámos
pela primeira vez, fomos surpreendidos com uma sala recheada de
público, com seis mil pessoas, ávidas para nos ouvir.
Fantástico e tudo indica que voltaremos em breve a esse
país", adiantou-nos o teclista dos Madredeus, que no
início de 97 lançou no mercado um álbum a solo com
instrumentais.
Sobre as digressões a efectuar, Carlos
Maria Trindade referiu que acabaram de concluir este ciclo de
actuações no México, EUA (sete concertos) e Canadá e agora,
já este fim de semana, 8, 9 e 10 de Novembro, actuarão no
Coliseu de Lisboa, aquelas que serão as únicas actuações em
Portugal este ano, seguindo-se Itália (16, 17 e 19 de Novembro),
Espanha (23 e 26 de Novembro), Bélgica (30 de Novembro), Holanda (4 de Dezembro)
e França (12 de Dezembro). "Tencionamos visitar,
durante a extensa digressão mundial que agora arranca,
alguns territórios onde os Madredeus ainda não actuaram,
estando já confirmada uma digressão à Polónia e regressos à
Alemanha e ao Japão.", disse-nos C.M.T., adiantando até
que no caso do Japão trata-se de um "amor recíproco":
os espectáculos dos Madredeus no Japão têm a tradução
simultânea dos temas num ecrã gigante no palco, os
japoneses adoram, emocionam-se e isso é altamente motivador para
qualquer artista.
O novo disco, "O Paraíso", apesar de ter sido editado mundialmente no passado dia 20 de Outubro, a verdade é que isso ainda não se verificou nos EUA. Irá acontecer em Dezembro. Esta digressão, nesta altura, surge um tanto ou quanto fora de tempo. Carlos Maria Trindade explica-nos:
"Sim, esta digressão deveria ocorrer depois da edição do disco aqui, mas a verdade é que já estava agendada desde o ano passado e tivemos de efectuar os concertos. Todavia, esperamos regressar aos EUA em Dezembro, aquando do lançamento do disco, com um espectáculo em Manhattan".
Sobre projectos do grupo, ouvimos Teresa Salgueiro:
"Depois das digressões anunciadas, as nossas atenções vão concentrar-se na Expo 98, onde iremos efectuar algumas actuações com músicos convidados, nomeadamente com um dos melhores violoncelistas brasileiros e com uma orquestra sinfónica, o que não constitui propriamente novidade, já que o ano passado, no Brasil, actuámos com uma orquestra sinfónica de S. Paulo e foi espectacular", disse-nos a simpática vocalista do grupo, que no final se mostrava muito satisfeita pela forma como tinha decorrido o espectáculo em New Bedford.
Por sua vez, Pedro Ayres Magalhães, o grande "cérebro" do grupo, que se mostra muito entusiasmado com o novo colectivo, revelou-nos que "esta nova formação não pode comparar-se à outra. São muitas as diferenças. Insisto que não se deveriam comparar, embora tenham o mesmo nome. Não se compõe para baixo, guitarra e teclados da mesma maneira que para o antigo conjunto de instrumentos. Os arranjos são outros. Para tocar as canções antigas com este ensemble, teria de fazer arranjos totalmente novos".
No dia seguinte, no Berklee Performance Center, em Boston, segundo um amigo nosso que assistiu ao espectáculo, os cerca de 1.500 lugares esgotaram-se por completo, com muitos americanos a assistirem e no final os Madredeus tiveram de regressar ao palco por duas vezes, entusiasticamente ovacionados...
Bravo!
